TikTok Officially Becomes YouTube

The vertical video platform TikTok finds itself in a very different place from its beginnings these days. TikTok, which sparked changes on Instagram and other platforms with vertical and short videos, is now trying to mimic YouTube. According to some reports, TikTok now wants and encourages users to make horizontal videos. These videos will also be longer.

TikTok appears to be encouraging creators to post horizontal videos longer than one minute, according to a prompt seen by creators. The platform states that it will « boost » these videos within 72 hours of their upload. Creators who have been on TikTok for more than three months may see an increase in views, provided the videos they create are not advertisements or from political parties.

Horizontal videos are the opposite of the vertical videos that have become widespread with TikTok. On the other hand, the YouTubeification of TikTok has been underway for some time. The platform is currently testing 30-minute videos, just a few months after starting to extend video lengths up to 15 minutes. Additionally, longer or horizontal videos represent a monetization method for the company. Longer videos create a suitable environment for advertising placement, much like most YouTube videos.

This is not the first time TikTok has encouraged its most valuable asset – content creators – to publish more YouTube-like content on the platform. Its new paywall program, Series, allows users to create collections of videos with a maximum duration of 20 minutes for paying subscribers. Content creators can set their prices between $1 and $190.

TikTok has also launched the « TikTok Shop » feature in recent months. Now, TikTok Shop will automatically function within videos, and products will be linked to the platform’s products for items in the videos. With all these elements, TikTok’s competition with YouTube is set to intensify further. On the other hand, YouTube offers alternatives to TikTok on the platform with features such as Shorts.
